Ponyville used to be just another small town on the banks of the Rainbow River until Mayor Pie was elected. He started construction on an impressive castle, all bright and happy colors, and set up the University at Ponyville (Home of the Fightin’ Woolies! Go UPV!). He started a big push to bring in the next generation of ponies to its neighborhoods, and, as expected, young ponies started moving to Ponyville in droves.
Then something happened over in this place called Course. Something involving the Rainbow of Light, a Princess, the Dark Rainbow, and a little-known young healer named Kail. The Rainbow of Light helped Kail and the Princess defeat the Dark Rainbow and cut it into its separate stripes. Little did Kail know that the stripes all fell near Ponyville, the very city she moved to just weeks after the incident in Course.
Each of the Dark Rainbow's separate stripes, knowing that they must find each other and become one again in order to exact revenge on the meddling Princess and Rainbow of Light (Kail was thought to be dead by them), turned into a mono-color pony, each with its own evil power. Said ponies terrorized the town for a bit before starting to congregate. The only problem was, they thought there were only six of them. The seventh pony, the one who would tie them all together, was lost without any memory of who or what she was, and could not remain conscious for long periods of time. The six, thinking they could join at any time, stormed Mayor Pie’s beloved castle and took many ponies prisoner.
The Rainbow of Light, having realized what had happened, decided the best way to counter the Dark Rainbow would be to "fight fire with fire" and it separated into its own stripes, each one finding a host within a different pony and giving that pony all of its power. These ponies were called the "Champions of the Rainbow" and glowed with their stripe’s aura while it was with them.
As the Champions found one another they headed towards the castle, and what they thought was to be the final showdown. They fought, very bravely, against the Dark Rainbow and all of its allies, and did manage to kill most of the dark stripes, which were then free to join together to make the Dark Rainbow once again. During the fighting the castle ended up crashing to the ground in total destruction. It would take a year to fix all of the damage and rebuild the castle to its former glory.
Those Champions and Dark Stripes that were left converged on Razzaroo's Curiosity Shop, where the dark indigo stripe had been taken, unconscious. At first the plan was to kill her, but the Champions soon realized that killing her would actually speed up the process for the Dark Rainbow to piece itself back together. The plan became to kill all the other stripes and trap them within her frozen (but still living) body. She would be held in a state of suspended animation within the ice for as long as it was needed. With the help of the Rainbow of Light (which left each Champion one by one), Silverfall's spirit and the Elementals, the dark indigo stripe was frozen into a pony popsicle, with all the other stripes trapped inside.
The pony popsicle was taken to the Darklands and given to the Dark Mystic as a gift. Of course, now he is gone, and a new queen reigns. Who knows what will become of that dark gift?
After a night of emptiness, the Rainbow of Light came back to the Champions and instilled in each one a small ribbon of the stripe they had carried. They each carry a "second symbol" of their stripe's color, in various places, to mark them as a Champion of the Rainbow of Light.
Ponyville licked its wounds as the Nursery went into overdrive to provide shelter and food to the now-homeless young ponies of the town. Many of the orphaned foals stayed at the Nursery, and it soon became known city-wide as the place to go if you needed help… with just about anything. As the new castle was built (in much more muted colors this time) and the citizens of Ponyville healed their wounds, things began to get back to normal, although they would never forget what the Rainbows had done to their beautiful town and their original castle.
Tyr, one of the Old Gods, came to Ponyville and noticed the disillusion of many of its citizens. As he fostered his relationship with his own followers, other Gods and Goddesses began arriving to look for their own mages. Even those who were once considered Champions of Light fell prey to the Gods who would renounce the Rainbow and claim the world for their own, and with each new mage came a surge of new power in the sleepy old Gods.
But nine Gods and a Rainbow in one town did not fit; someone needed to go. And there were those who would renounce all of it, Gods and Rainbow, and live in a world where magic, white and black, has died away. As the dark and light Gods began to fight over mages, the remaining Champions did the best they could to contain them all. But when the orange stripe of the dark rainbow showed at the battle, and one of the Champions accidentally shot one of the others with a poisoned arrow, the tide seemed to be turning against them.
Desperate, and not knowing anything else to do, the ponies fighting against the Gods began to proclaim their disbelief – loudly – about their status. For the Gods are only as powerful as those who worship them let them be, and the constant barrage of disbelief did more to drain their power than any amount of fighting. In the end it was this that reigned in the power of the Old Gods, and sent them running from Ponyville… although a few stayed behind.
Eshu, one of the dark gods, was nearly killed and saved only by his dedicated mages. In a suicidal effort to destroy the citizens of Ponyland, he has traveled to the Volcano of Doom in the Black Mountains to find the remaining smooze and alter it into a virus that will kill most of the ponies. After infecting one of his mages, Eshu sent her out on an errand that he knew would take her through most of Ponyville, contaminating every pony and building she came in contact with. His plan has worked, and Ponyville has come down with a case of the sniffles that everyone has been writing off as early allergies or a late winter cold.
As the virus silently spread, the Champions were called out to Dream Valley – the Rainbow of Light’s locket had been stolen by pirates! With the defenders of the Rainbow spreading the virus on their way to Course, and the first deaths being reported by the virus now called PAARS, Ponyland is in a heap of trouble. It’s going to take more than a Rainbow to save them.
