This boy was stamped at the old board already.
name: Barnacle
age: 61
type: earth
description: blue body, curly blazing red orange mane with a golden streak (growing grey at the sides) and pinkish-purple eyes. He wears a black eye patch over his left eye and a yellow bandana around his neck (no pirate hat though: I’ve always thought the hat was too much). He has a very strong body-build, and though he is clearly getting old, he still has quite impressive muscles.
symbol: a red and gold treasure chest with sparkling gold coins in it
powers: none
temperament: Barnacle has a fierce temper and a hungry heart. He is a rumbustious and quarrelsome old pirate, who was never especially famous nor especially successful. He has always been greedy, but due to bad luck he has not been able to gather himself a fortune, which has made him frustrated and angry. He does keep up his condition, however, and it is hard to believe him as old as he really is. His mind is still as sharp as it always was, and though his hooves are not as agile as they used to be, he can still hold a weapon and fight any stallion, or that’s what he likes to think. He won’t admit to growing old and though he has grown more irritable of late, he still keeps up his reputation of a flirtatious stallion. Not having the looks he used to, he isn’t as successful as he once was, though. He loves to tell tales about his past adventures and would sit for hours just talking, if he was allowed. He still hasn’t lost his ambitions, either, and if anyone should offer him an adventure, he would jump on it.
history: Barnacle was born on a merchant ship. His mother lived on her husband’s small merchant ship, to be closer to her two loves: the sea and her husband. Barnacle learned everything from sailing from his father, and for the first years of Barnacle’s life everything seemed to go well. But it was not to last forever. Barnacle’s father’s ship was caught in a terrible storm, and Barnacle and his father were thrown overboard. His father drowned, but Barnacle managed to save himself on a small island far from the coasts of Dream Valley. The ship, having lost its captain and first mate, drifted helplessly away, before any of the other ponies on board managed to get it under control.
This was how Barnacle arrived at the island of a horrible Wizard who was obsessed with acquiring magic and riches. He captured Barnacle, and was disappointed to find that he had no magic. Then the Wizard sent him to his mines to mine jewels for him. It was during his efforts to escape those mines that Barnacle lost his other eye, but he did manage to get off from the island. However, he would never be the same again.
Barnacle had caught the disease of greed while working in those mines. He had even managed to steal a few jewels with him, and it was from those jewels that his career as a pirate began. He acquired himself men and weapons and a ship, and then began to sail around the Ponyland seas to find treasures. He didn’t always rob: when he could find a forgotten treasure, he jumped for it, but sometimes there would be times when he could find no treasures, and he had to pay his men, so he turned to pirating.
Barnacle’s mother was quite devastated by all this, since she had now lost both a husband and a son, but though Barnacle always felt rather guilty for causing such grief to his mother, he never could apologise, let alone change his ways.
Barnacle’s love life was never especially busy, but he did manage to achieve a foal during his days of pirating. The way he did this was not especially admirable, however, since he simply seduced a mare in one port and then left her alone with the child. Sea Tiger was born when Barnacle was no where near the shores of Ponyland, and his mother cursed Barnacle’s name to the seventh hell. For Barnacle’s defence it must be said, however, that he did return to the port a year later to visit the mare again. The mare, who wanted to be rid of the foal, hid Sea Tiger into Barnacle’s ship. Barnacle found the foal and recognised him immediately for his son, but did not want to admit to being his father. So he simply took the foal in and raised him on the ship but never told him the truth.
Since then, Barnacle has drifted apart from his son as Sea Tiger found himself a new life elsewhere. Barnacle and Tiger fought often while Tiger still was on his ship, so when the colt left, he wished him good riddance and hoped never to see him again. Lately, however, as his career – and his life – draws to an end, Barnacle has come to regret his decisions about his son. He has heard distant stories about Sea Tiger, how he has his own ship now. Barnacle has lost his ship and his crew and everything else he might have ever had, and works as a mercenary and a hired hand now – doing scattered jobs wherever he can get them, thinking about what he has thrown away when he threw away his son.
